The Defence Department headquarters and Alexandra Barracks in Buckle St, Wellington, in about 1910. The brick building at right housed the entire Defence Department headquarters in August 1914, but wartime expansion forced the department to spill over into other buildings. The tall barracks building on top of the Pukeahu rise was used as a prison for conscientious objectors in the latter part of the war. The National War Memorial and the former Dominion Museum now occupy this site.
