Elizabeth McCombs was the first woman to become a Member of Parliament in New Zealand when she was elected as a Labour Party candidate in a Lyttelton by-election in 1933. She succeeded her late husband, James, who had held the seat since 1913. Sadly, Elizabeth died after just two years in Parliament.
