In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Tāmati Pīkauterangi signed Te Tiriti at Queen Charlotte Sound on 5 May 1840. He was born in about 1810 and migrated with Ngāti Mutunga to the Wellington region in the 1820s.
In 1890 he gave detailed evidence in the Native Land Court about the turbulent events of the 1820s and 1830s.
